As we begin a new month and approach the beginning of another fall season, I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. May we all be inspired to stretch beyond our comfort zones and embrace this new season with confidence, knowledge, wisdom, kindness, and hope for positive and impactful change.
Stretch yourself this September
Speaking of stretching and change, this past weekend I had the pleasure of running my first official 5k race in support of my singing mate from C3 Hampton, my beloved church. It was a pleasure to take part in the race alongside my husband, who was her trainer, and three other members of our church family. My singing mate brought us together in a way that was meaningful at community and personal levels. The race was truly an example of rejoicing when others rejoice. Watching her achieve her goals was heartwarming and inspiring. I was also proud of my husband who not only helped her achieve her goals but also made sure, through social media posts and videos, that others could catch the vision and follow through with their goals.

During my dear friend’s fitness journey, my husband encouraged her to run the race which eventually turned into a team effort with several church members signing up to join her. Although I knew about these plans, I hadn’t considered participating in the actual race. My plan was to support my husband from the sidelines like I typically do, the loyal cheerleader. But this time, something was different. I wanted to support in a different way. Something nudged me to take an active approach.
I did not engage in the typical training process; long before the “K” races became popular, I was running for my health as it was simply a lifestyle. As a former runner (high school cross country and track, as well as years of running after the birth of my two children), I was familiar with the race prep. It helps that I’ve always maintained a healthy diet, even when I didn’t always workout as often as I should. Nevertheless, a mix of HIIT, Pilates and Yoga, my regular exercise routines, prepared me for the race. While this worked for me, I strongly encourage anyone considering a 5K to follow a proper training plan, as structured preparation is the safest and most effective way to build endurance, prevent injury, and enjoy the experience.
As we approached race day, I admit I was nervous. I hadn’t officially trained, and honestly I wasn’t even planning on running, but rather walking and enjoying the camaraderie. After all, this race wasn’t about me, it was about supporting a friend and my husband’s passion for fitness training and running.
I was anxious nonetheless but knowing that we would be running as a team eased my mind. I prayed for everyone involved, that we would run a good race. I also prayed that God would give me the strength and courage to run my own course.

Race day came so quickly it seemed. The weather was perfect and the energy at the beach where we were running was positive and engaging. My friend’s family showed up to support her and the entire team. It was so touching seeing them rooting her on. As for me, the race was a testament to God’s grace and steadfastness and my faith in Him. I intentionally didn’t bring my ear buds, allowing the Lord to whisper to me along the 3.1 miles. It was a humbling, yet rewarding experience. There were a few moments where I felt like giving up, especially when I turned the corner near the finish line with the wind blowing towards me. I whispered, “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus…push me to the finish line, Lord.” There was an assurance from within that I was being carried by the almighty. As I approached the finish line and heard my name, I smiled and let out a loud woo Hoo, hands up! I did it! Thank you, Lord.

In the moments after the race, I quickly reflected on this beautiful milestone. I realized how powerful the mind and body were. I softly gave God His glory, acknowledging His handiwork and thanking Him for carrying me through. A strong sense of relief, confidence and gratitude overwhelmed me, reminding me that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. As we embrace our God given assignments this month, in the last quarter of the year, and beyond, may we look to God to stretch, strengthen and empower us to run our race, fulfilling the mission, fully equipped and with patience and endurance.
